US Open Championship
Every June, the world’s finest golfers assemble to take on one of the toughest majors of the season. The US Open Championship never fails to deliver in terms of skill and surprises. The final round will be on Father’s Day, and what a better excuse to take a trip to New York State, enjoy the world’s best golf on a stunning course?
2020 sees the US Open return to Winged Foot’s West Course for the first time since 2006. This is a notoriously challenging course, and one of the most prestigious and historic in the USA. Its clubhouse is beautifully traditional, and harks back to an era gone by. Despite being close to New York City, the sprawling greens and woodland immerse you in nature. This was where a rainbow emerged from the rain as Davis Love III sank a 12-foot birdie to claim the PGA title in 1997; this was where Fuzzy Zoeller waved a white towel in mock surrender to Greg Norman, before taking it to a playoff that he would then win; this was where Phil Mickelson double-bogeyed to lose what seemed like a guaranteed a third-straight major, to hand the Open to Geoff Ogilvy. Feel the tension and watch the drama unfold on the west course.
Its vicinity to Manhattan makes the 2020 US Open a great excuse to see the bright lights of NYC. Capeseven can organise Broadway tickets, make reservations for that new restaurant you’ve read about, and help you see that exciting new exhibition at MoMA. Equally, Westechester county, where Winged Foot club is located, has lots to see and do, so take some time to explore while you’re there.
